How Do You Know if a head Injury is Serious?

Accidents happen. Often, the smallest misstep can lead to a big fall or injury – but when is a head bump is just a little bruise, and when is it worth rushing to the emergency room? The fact is that you should never take a head injury too lightly – rather be safe than sorry.

If you have no other symptoms except a bit of pain where you hit your head, you should be ok. If you have the symptoms below, go and see your doctor.

A minor head injury usually reveals itself through a series of symptoms:

Headache

Slight dizziness or spinning sensation

Light-headedness

Confusion

Nausea

Ringing in the ears

If these symptoms get worse or are worse, it’s time to start seeking urgent medical attention. Let’s look at the symptoms of a serious head injury:

  1. Seizures
  2. Loss of consciousness
  3. Vomiting
  4. Trouble balancing
  5. Serious confusion
  6. Strange mood changes
  7. Very bad or on-going headache
  8. Feeling disorientated
  9. Loss of memory
  10. Struggling to focus your eyes
  11. Strange eye movements
  12. Losing muscle control
  13. Any water or fluid running from the ear or nose
